2020 Perth Mint Lunar Mouse 1 oz Silver Coin
This recently released 2020 1 oz Silver Lunar Year of The Mouse Coin is the first issue in the Lunar Series III from the Perth Mint. The previous Lunar I series, released by the Perth Mint in 1999, immediately gained massive popularity within a short time. Riding the popularity wave of the Lunar Series I, the Perth Mint began issuing the Lunar II series in 2008, with the "Year of the Mouse". This means the two series actually overlapped between 2008 and 2010. The Lunar Series III is beginning this year with the release of the Mouse coin. The high metal purity and detailed Zodiac designs make the Lunar program very popular among coin collectors, making it a celebrated series. Every year the Australian Perth Mint issues a brand new Lunar coin showcasing the Chinese Zodiac animal for that year.
The New Lunar Year or Chinese New Year marks the beginning of a Chinese calendar year and each cycle is named after an animal.
Do you know how this came about?
One of the ancient folk story tells that the Jade Emperor decreed that the years on the calendar would be named after each animal, in the order they reached him. To get there, the animals would have to cross a river. There were 13 animals came to the race.
The Cat and Mouse were very bad at swimming, but they were both quite intelligent. They decided that the best and fastest way to cross the river was to hop on the back of the Ox. The Ox, being kind hearted and naive, agreed to carry them both across. As the Ox was about to reach the other side of the river, the Mouse pushed the Cat into the water, and then jumped off the Ox and rushed to the Jade Emperor. Hence, the Mouse was named as the first animal of the zodiac calendar. The Ox had to settle in second place.
The 2020 Chinese Zodiac animal is the Mouse. People who were born during this animal’s year are thought to be brave, enterprising, and critical thinkers. These traits usually make someone a great business person or entrepreneur. Stubbornness and selectiveness are known to crop up from time to time in those born in the Year of the Mouse, but their friends and family always appreciate their friendliness and positive energy.
